Hard to imagine one of the world’s most famous museums and art galleries also being home to the latest fashions, but the 900-year-old Louvre in Paris, France, wasn’t just hosting any ol’ fashion show.
Salvatore Ferragamo was one of the first fashion houses to tap Hollywood into being the symbol of fashion that it is today, according to news reports. Although the company started as a shoe repair business, it grew when famous stars of the 1920s took notice and grew from there.
The Louvre show is likely another milestone for the Italian company. It is pushing for fashion to be recognized as a high art, and it has sponsored the Leonardo da Vinci exhibition La Sainte Anne. The sponsorship is what is allowing them to have Ferragamo 2013 fashions go down the catwalk in the famous museum.
It’s also one of the longest catwalks in Paris, measuring at about 460 feet long! Those shoes better be walk-able or those models will have a hard time …
Fashion is a form of art — design takes equal amounts creativity and practicality (and not even always that). Whether it’s a “high” art is tough to say, and that only applies if you accept that one type of art is better than another. Fashion designers often want to express something through their work so that others can also express themselves. Doesn’t that make it art?
But still, the fashion show must have been amazing in such a setting. The lead creative director used pale, stone colors that meshed well with the colors found inside and outside the Louvre itself. Will the association between da Vinci’s brilliant and the Ferragamo brand stick?
Perhaps. It came at a high price, and although the amount hasn’t been released to the public, it must have been a pretty large sum to get the first catwalk fashion show in the Louvre!
